Russian Blue
The Russian Blue is a short-haired domestic cat breed native to northern Russia, documented since the 1860s. Sailors transported the original blue felines from the White Sea port of Arkhangelsk to Great Britain, entering competition at London's Crystal Palace in 1875. Formal registry status followed in 1949 from both CFA and FIFe, with TICA granting championship acceptance in 1979.
Skeletal proportions reflect a semi-foreign body type characterized by long, fine-boned legs and a slender, muscular torso. Overall adult weight measures 3.6-6.8 kg (8-15 lb), with shoulder height reaching 20-25 cm (8-10 in). The head forms a smooth, medium wedge with a flat profile descending straight from brow level to nose tip. Large, pointed ears sit wide at the skull base, featuring thin translucent skin scantily covered with fine hair. Wide-set eyes display a rounded aperture and develop a vivid, uniform emerald green hue during adolescence.
The standout physical trait is a short, plush double coat whose dense undercoat pushes guard hairs outward from the skin. Individual guard hairs carry blue pigmentation along the shaft with unpigmented silver tips that create a lustrous surface sheen under ambient light. Standard evaluations describe an alert, gentle demeanor and a tranquil temperament. Cats display quiet voices and affectionate loyalty toward familiar household members, yet often retreat quietly when encountering unfamiliar visitors or sudden domestic commotions, showing a strong fondness for predictable feeding and play schedules.
Weekly grooming with a soft bristle brush or damp chamois cloth suffices to collect dead fur without flattening the natural spring of the double coat. Regular tooth brushing reduces plaque formation along the gumline, while fresh water fountains encourage hydration. A measured diet prevents excess weight gain, as the breed readily consumes extra rations when given unrestricted kibble access. Diagnosed clinical conditions in veterinary case reports include obesity, feline lower urinary tract disease, struvite bladder stones, diabetes mellitus, and periodontal disease.
