Kurilian Bobtail
The Kurilian Bobtail is a natural Russian domestic cat breed from the Kuril Islands, celebrated for its pom-pom tail and hunting prowess.
Native island populations developed without human intervention on Sakhalin, Kamchatka, and the volcanic Kuril archipelago for over two centuries. Feral colonies adapted to harsh weather conditions through natural selection, hunting rodents and catching fish along coastlines and riverbeds. Russian military personnel and scientists returning from island deployments introduced the cats to the central Russian mainland during the late twentieth century. Breed registration started through the Soviet Felinological Federation in 1991. The Fédération Internationale Féline awarded official recognition in 2004, while The International Cat Association accepted the breed for championship competition in 2012.
Adult males weigh 5-7 kg (11-15 lb) with a compact, semi-cobby torso and a slightly arched back. Longer hind legs give the stance an agile, forward slope. A signature bobbed tail measures 1.5-13 cm (0.6-5.1 in) and contains two to ten kinked vertebrae forming an individual spiral or whisk. Both short and semi-long coats occur with a dense, water-resistant undercoat. Standards describe an independent yet extraordinarily affectionate nature. Kurilians are confident, highly intelligent problem solvers that retain a strong fondness for playing with water and exploring outdoor spaces.
Grooming involves brushing once or twice a week to remove loose strands from the dense double coat, increasing to multiple weekly combings during seasonal molts. The water-repellent guard hair resists dirt and minimizes matting under normal conditions. Kurilians retain exceptional natural vigor without breed-specific hereditary defects traced to the bobtail mutation. Common medical conditions seen in mature cats include periodontal disease, benign renal cysts, and feline lower urinary tract disease.
