Peterbald
The Peterbald is an oriental-type hairless and coated cat breed developed in Saint Petersburg, Russia, in 1994.
Russian felinologist Olga Mironova created the foundation stock by crossing a hairless Don Sphynx sire with an Oriental Shorthair dam, yielding four original kittens named Mandarin, Muscat, Nezhenka, and Nokturn. The International Cat Association accepted the breed in 1997 and granted championship status in 2005, while the Fédération Internationale Féline added official recognition in 2012.
This medium-sized cat has a long, slender body supported by fine bones, firm musculature, and straight legs ending in oval paws with agile toes. Most mature individuals weigh 2.5-4.5 kg (6-10 lb), carrying a long whip-like tail and a wedge-shaped head with oversized ears and almond-shaped eyes. A dominant mutation causes varying hairlessness across five distinct coat categories: ultra-bald, suede-like chamois, velvety flock, wiry brush, and normal straight hair. Whisker pads show crinkled or missing whiskers. Kittens often change coat texture during their first two years before settling into a permanent texture.
Registry descriptions portray the Peterbald as an inquisitive, exceptionally affectionate, and vocal feline that bonds intently with humans. It frequently follows family members between rooms, perches on shoulders, and communicates through expressive chirps and trills. The cat shares quarters peacefully with dogs and other cats, displaying high curiosity and sustained playfulness into adulthood. Because the hairless skin lacks an insulating coat, the cat seeks warm resting spots near radiators and sunlit blankets. The elevated metabolic rate needed to maintain core body temperature demands calorie-dense nutrition served in measured daily meals.
Skin care requires bathing every one to three weeks with mild cat shampoo to clear natural sebum and prevent greasy residue from staining fabrics. Regular maintenance involves cleaning waxy ear secretions, wiping debris around nail folds, and trimming claws. Exposure to direct sunlight risks thermal burns, while cold rooms induce hypothermia. Health concerns identified in the breed include feline ectodermal dysplasia, which can cause abnormal dentition and poor lactation in homozygous cats. Other documented medical issues include Malassezia dermatitis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, corneal scratches, and progressive retinal atrophy.
