Donskoy

The Donskoy is a hairless domestic cat breed developed in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, during the late 1980s.

The lineage began in 1987 when Elena Kovaleva rescued a kitten named Varvara, who started shedding her coat at four months old. In 1990, Varvara produced a litter containing hairless kittens, demonstrating that the trait stemmed from a dominant genetic mutation distinct from the recessive mutation found in Canadian Sphynx cats. Breeder Irina Nemikina acquired foundation stock, established an outcrossing program with European Shorthairs, and developed the breed originally known as the Don Sphynx. The World Cat Federation granted recognition in 1997, The International Cat Association accepted the breed as the Donskoy in 2005, and the Fédération Internationale Féline followed in 2011 under the name Don Sphynx.

Males weigh 4-6 kg (9-13 lb) and females 3-4 kg (6-9 lb). A medium-length, muscular, solid body has webbed toes and a rounded abdomen known as a fatty belly. Four coat types appear at birth: the Rubber Bald stays completely hairless, while Flock, Velour, and Brush kittens lose most or all of their hair as they mature. The elastic skin forms deep wrinkles around the forehead, neck, and abdomen. Standard descriptions portray the Donskoy as inquisitive, gentle, and social. They actively seek close physical warmth from their human family, get along with other pets, and follow owners continuously.

Care requirements center on skin hygiene because the absence of fur leaves bodily secretions on the skin surface. Owners must wipe the body weekly with damp washcloths and provide periodic warm baths to avoid sebum congestion. Because bare skin burns in strong sunlight and loses heat rapidly during winter, indoor temperature regulation and protective clothing are essential. Health issues documented in the breed include dermatological problems such as follicular cysts, contact dermatitis, and bacterial pyoderma. They also face higher risks of ocular irritation, entropion, corneal ulcers, and feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
