Norwegian Forest Cat

The Norwegian Forest Cat is a natural domestic cat breed from Norway that evolved over hundreds of years in cold Scandinavian regions.

Local rural folklore and Norse tales described long-haired forest felines for generations before formal breeding programs started in the twentieth century. Enthusiasts organized preservation efforts in the 1930s, though work stalled during the Second World War. Activity resumed in the 1970s, leading King Olav V to designate it the official cat of Norway. The Federation Internationale Feline registered the breed in 1977. American fanciers imported breeding stock in 1979, after which the Cat Fanciers' Association accepted registrations in 1987 and granted championship status in 1993.

Adult females usually reach 3.6-8 kg (7.9-17.6 lb), while males weigh 4.5-9 kg (9.9-19.8 lb). The body is muscular, long, and heavily boned, with hind legs longer than the forelegs and tufted paws built for climbing. Its double coat combines a dense woolly underlayer with long, glossy, water-repellent guard hairs that form an extensive neck ruff. Breed standards describe the personality as mild-mannered, intelligent, resourceful, and interactive. The temperament suits family homes because the cat adapts smoothly to domestic activities and plays with other pets without aggression.

Routine coat maintenance requires combing once each week, though spring shedding periods demand daily brushing to remove dead fur. Regular nail trimming and ear cleanings keep the ears free from accumulated wax. Specific health conditions documented in the breed include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, hip dysplasia, glycogen storage disease type IV, and retinal dysplasia.
