Sphynx

The Sphynx is a hairless domestic cat breed that originated in Canada during the mid-1960s. Development started in Toronto in 1966 when a shorthair mother produced a hairless kitten named Prune. Breeding lines expanded in 1975 with farm kittens from Minnesota and in 1978 with additional hairless stray kittens found in Ontario.

Registry acceptance came after decades of careful breeding. The Cat Fanciers' Association accepted the breed for registration in 1998 and advanced it to championship competition in 2002. The International Cat Association gave championship status in 1998, and the Fédération Internationale Féline added recognition in 2002. Cats of this breed show a medium build with a firm, rounded abdomen and muscular limbs. Normal body length runs 30-38 cm (12-15 in). A male typically reaches 3.5-5.5 kg (8-12 lb), whereas a female stays lighter at 2.7-4 kg (6-9 lb).

Skin texture feels like soft suede or chamois leather. A fine layer of downy peach fuzz covers much of the body, with short hair often present on the bridge of the nose, paws, tail, and ear margins. Pigment shows directly across the epidermis in solid, tabby, tortoiseshell, and pointed patterns. Registries note a sweet-tempered, lively, and intelligent demeanor. These cats behave in an inquisitive, outgoing manner, seeking close physical proximity to their human companions for heat and interaction. They adapt well to handling and maintain a high level of activity through maturity.

Daily care centers on hygiene and climate management. Because no coat absorbs cutaneous secretions, bodily oils collect within skin creases, ear canals, and nail beds. Routine sponge baths or weekly washings prevent sebum buildup and cutaneous rashes. Wiping ear canals removes dense brown wax, and nail trimming clears oily deposits around the claws. Indoor housing shelters sensitive skin from sunburn, and heated bedding counteracts fast body heat loss. Documented medical disorders include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, hereditary myopathy, urticaria pigmentosa, corneal ulcers, periodontal disease, and urate urolithiasis.
