Maine Coon
The Maine Coon is a large, rugged domestic cat breed that originated in the northeastern state of Maine in the United States.
Local lore often attributed its bushy tail to raccoons, but the breed developed naturally from local shorthaired barn cats mating with longhaired cats brought by seafarers. Exhibited in American feline competitions during the late nineteenth century, the cat won early honors at Madison Square Garden in 1895. The breed faced a steep decline when imported Persian cats gained prominence, but organized preservation efforts revived it, leading to championship recognition by the Cat Fanciers' Association in 1976 and The International Cat Association in 1979.
Adult males reach 6-9 kg (13-20 lb) and carry a solid rectangular torso supported by substantial boning and muscular legs. A dense, water-repellent coat grows unevenly across the body, featuring shorter hair over the shoulders that lengthens into shaggy britches, a prominent frontal ruff, and a broad tail. Registries describe the cat as an amiable, gentle companion noted for chirping vocalizations, high social drive, and remarkable agility despite its massive frame.
Caring for this feline requires weekly brushing with a wide-toothed comb to untangle the undercoat and distribute natural skin oils. The breed matures slowly, reaching full physical density around four or five years of age. Health concerns documented in pedigree lines include feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy associated with mutations in the MYBPC3 gene, hip dysplasia, spinal muscular atrophy, and dental stomatitis.
