European Shorthair
The European Shorthair is a pedigreed domestic cat breed developed in Sweden from native European landrace cats during the twentieth century. Early breeders sought to protect authentic northern farm mousers from crossbreeding, and Finland later selected this animal as its national cat.
Scandinavian breeders started structured selection in the early twentieth century to preserve indigenous Nordic house cats as foreign pedigreed varieties grew in favor. The earliest known European Shorthair recorded in the registry of the Fédération Internationale Féline was born in 1940. For decades, cat fancy organizations evaluated these cats alongside British Shorthairs under a shared competition standard. In 1982, the Fédération Internationale Féline granted official recognition to the European Shorthair as a distinct breed with individual criteria. The International Cat Association maintains registration tracking only, while Sweden lists the breed among its endangered domestic populations.
Body structure shows a medium to large frame, with a standing height of 23-30 cm (9-12 in) and an overall weight between 3.6-7 kg (8-15 lb). The breed profile defines a muscular torso with a broad chest, sturdy legs, and a thick tail tapering to a rounded tip. Fur remains short, dense, glossy, and springy in solid shades, tortie, and tabby patterns. Temperament evaluations highlight an adaptable, balanced personality with a stable psyche. Cats show playful behaviors, entertain themselves with toys, and live comfortably alongside dogs and children.
Coat maintenance involves a weekly brushing with a fine comb to remove shedding hair and preserve skin condition. Claw care relies on access to scratching posts alongside occasional nail trimming, while oral hygiene routines prevent plaque accumulation along the gums. Measured daily feeding schedules and continuous access to fresh water support physical condition. Documented medical conditions identified in the breed include feline obesity, periodontal dental disease, polycystic kidney disease, and urate urolithiasis, an ailment marked by mineral stone formation inside the urinary bladder.
