Toyger
The Toyger is a domestic shorthair cat breed created in the United States during the late 1980s. Breeder Judy Sugden started the program to produce a miniature tiger look after noticing circular temple markings on her cat Millwood Sharp Shooter. Foundation crosses united a striped domestic shorthair named Scrapmetal, a Bengal named Millwood Rumpled Spotskin, and a street cat imported from India named Jammu Blu.
The International Cat Association accepted the Toyger for registration in 1993, elevated it to exhibition classes in 2000, and granted championship status in 2007. Other major registries such as the Cat Fanciers' Association and the Fédération Internationale Féline do not grant recognition. The build is medium to deep, featuring a long, athletic torso with heavy boning and powerful forequarters. Typical height ranges between 23-33 cm (9-13 in). Males reach a weight of 4.5-7 kg (10-15 lb), whereas females stay smaller at 3-5 kg (7-11 lb).
A dense, soft coat carries a plush texture accented by golden glitter across the hair tips. Dark brown to black vertical markings form a modified mackerel tabby pattern over a warm reddish background, while white coloration highlights the throat, chest, belly, and inside legs. Stripes circle the head and jowls rather than radiating outward. Show guidelines emphasize an even, unchallenging temperament. Owners describe these cats as outgoing, playful, and responsive companions that enjoy interactive fetch games, leash walking, and socializing with both humans and other domestic pets.
Coat care requires simple weekly combing with a slicker brush or grooming mitt to clear shed hair and distribute natural oils. Because these cats have high stamina and athletic agility, indoor environments require climbing structures, scratching posts, and puzzle toys to satisfy physical exercise needs. Routine claw trimming, ear examinations, and dental cleaning maintain daily wellness. Known veterinary conditions documented in the breed include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, progressive retinal atrophy, benign or pathologic heart murmurs, pyruvate kinase deficiency, agalactia, and feline lower urinary tract disease.
