Snowshoe
The Snowshoe is a pointed domestic cat breed developed in the United States during the 1960s. It originated through crosses between Siamese cats and domestic bicolor shorthairs.
Breeder Dorothy Hinds-Daugherty launched the program in Philadelphia after finding three kittens with four white paws in a Siamese litter. To reproduce these distinctive markings, she bred the kittens to tuxedo-patterned American Shorthairs, creating the pointed body and white facial patches. When she stopped breeding, Virginia enthusiast Vikki Olander took over preservation efforts, drafted the first standard, and secured experimental status with the Cat Fanciers' Association in 1974. The International Cat Association approved the cat for championship status in 1994, followed by full recognition from the Fédération Internationale Féline in 2004.
Body dimensions fall into the medium range, with females weighing 3.2-4.5 kg (7-10 lb) and males reaching 4.1-5.4 kg (9-12 lb). The torso pairs the elongated lines of oriental ancestry with the muscular frame of domestic shorthairs, creating an athletic build. A modified wedge contour defines the face, framed by walnut-shaped blue eyes and medium ears with rounded tips. Flat, glossy fur lies close to the body without a thick undercoat. Color patterns feature dark points, white front mittens, white back boots, and an inverted white blaze over the muzzle.
Registries note a gentle, inquisitive personality paired with high social needs, leading these cats to follow household members from room to room. Many individuals vocalize with soft, melodic chirps and enjoy retrieving tossed toys or playing in running tap water. Grooming demands remain light, requiring only a weekly brushing with a soft bristle brush or grooming glove to clear shedding hair. Documented medical conditions observed in ancestral lines include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and polycystic kidney disease, alongside cosmetic inherited defects such as strabismus and kinked caudal vertebrae.
