Scottish Fold
The Scottish Fold is a domestic cat breed originating in Perthshire, Scotland, identified during 1961. Shepherd William Ross noticed a white farm cat named Susie near Coupar Angus whose ears folded forward. The breed achieved championship recognition from CFA in 1978 and TICA in 1979, while FIFe excludes the cat from registration over structural cartilage concerns.
A compact, rounded outline defines the medium body structure, supported by medium boning and sturdy legs. Overall body weight spans 2.7-6.0 kg (6-13 lb), alongside a standing height of 20-25 cm (8-10 in). The head is well-rounded with prominent whisker pads, a short nose showing a gentle dip, and large circular eyes separated by a broad bridge. Small forward-bent ears fold tightly downward against the cranium in individuals carrying the fold mutation. Flexible tails of medium to long length taper toward a rounded tip without stiffness.
Coat variations occur in both shorthair and longhair forms, accommodating every coat shade and pattern from solid black to silver shaded. Shorthair cats display dense, plush fur standing out from the body, whereas longhairs produce a full ruff, britches, toe tufts, and a feathery plume. Registry records emphasize a sweet, tranquil, and affectionate demeanor without nervous agitation. Cats frequently adjust to indoor family routines with ease, occasionally resting upright on their haunches in an unusual upright posture resembling an owl or a small prairie dog.
Gentle weekly combing controls shed hair in shorthairs, though longhaired coats demand thorough brushing three times each week to prevent troublesome mats around the belly and britches. Folded ear flaps reduce air circulation in the canals, necessitating regular damp-cotton cleanings to remove accumulated earwax. Controlled dietary portions prevent excess body weight from exerting mechanical stress on vulnerable limb joints. Recognized hereditary health conditions documented across veterinary research comprise osteochondrodysplasia causing progressive cartilage malformation, crippling osteoarthritis, shortened tail vertebrae, polycystic kidney disease, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
