British Shorthair
The British Shorthair is a pedigree domestic cat breed developed in the United Kingdom from the native working farm and street cats of Great Britain.
Its ancestors were the domestic cats that had lived in Britain for centuries as mousers on farms and in towns. Harrison Weir gathered and bred these everyday British working cats, leading to their formal public debut at the Crystal Palace cat show in London in 1871. Persian crosses made between 1914 and 1918 brought the longhair gene into the breed. Following population declines across two world wars, breeders crossed survivors with Russian Blues and domestic shorthairs to restore lines. The International Cat Association gave the breed championship status in June 1979, the Cat Fanciers' Association granted championship status in May 1980, and the Fédération Internationale Féline provides full championship registration.
Males weigh 4-8 kg (9-17 lb) and females 3-5 kg (7-12 lb). Compact and cobby, the body sits low on the legs, with a broad chest, sturdy round paws, and a thick tail ending in a blunt tip. The head is large, round, and broad, set on a short neck, with full cheeks, large round eyes, and small, wide-set ears. Its short, plush coat has a dense undercoat that produces a crisp texture that breaks over the body during movement. Breed standards allow solid colors such as blue, black, and red, as well as tabby, tortoiseshell, colourpoint, and bicolour patterns.
In temperament, standards call the British Shorthair calm, dignified, undemanding, and affectionate. Grooming requires brushing once a week with a slicker brush, with additional brushing during seasonal molting periods. Reported health conditions in the breed include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, polycystic kidney disease, feline lower urinary tract disease, osteoarthritis, and tooth resorption.
