Ocicat
The Ocicat is an entirely domestic spotted cat breed developed in Michigan, United States, in 1964.
Breeder Virginia Daly produced the first spotted kitten, named Tonga, during an effort to create an Abyssinian-pointed Siamese. Subsequent crosses incorporated the American Shorthair to increase bone density and introduce silver coloration, leading to registration with the Cat Fanciers' Association in 1966, championship status from The International Cat Association in 1986, championship approval from the Cat Fanciers' Association in 1987, and recognition by the Fédération Internationale Féline in 1992.
Despite a spotted pattern resembling a small wild cat, the animal carries no wild feline DNA. The athletic body displays substantial bone structure and tight muscles, with mature cats weighing 2.5-6.5 kg (6-14 lb). A modified wedge head features a well-defined muzzle, large almond-shaped eyes spaced widely, and broad-based ears set at a 45-degree angle. The short, sleek coat has a satiny sheen with banded agouti hair. Twelve distinct colors receive official recognition across tawny, chocolate, cinnamon, blue, lavender, and fawn shades, along with their matching silver equivalents.
Temperament evaluations emphasize an outgoing, active, and confident nature that bonds tightly with humans. Often characterized by owners as canine-like, the cat learns household routines quickly, greets visitors, retrieves thrown objects, and walks on a harness. Because of high energy and sharp intellect, the breed requires regular puzzle toys, climbing towers, and interactive play sessions to prevent destructive boredom. Prolonged solitude causes distress, making the cat best suited to households with attentive companions or other active pets. Vocal expressions remain frequent, inherited from the breed's foundational Siamese lineage.
Grooming needs remain light thanks to the close-lying hair, which stays glossy with a quick weekly pass using a rubber brush or chamois cloth. Periodic nail clipping, ear cleansing, and regular dental brushing complete the standard hygiene regimen. Providing vertical cat trees satisfies the breed's instinct for climbing and leaping. Named health conditions observed in the breed include progressive retinal atrophy, pyruvate kinase deficiency, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Renal amyloidosis, dental tartar, gingivitis, and pyometra in unspayed females also appear in clinical veterinary records.
