Munchkin
The Munchkin is a dwarf cat breed that originated in the United States during the twentieth century.
Veterinary journals described short-legged felines in Great Britain in 1944, though those family lines vanished during World War II. The modern foundation began in Rayville, Louisiana, in 1983 when music teacher Sandra Hochenedel rescued an expectant short-legged female named Blackberry. A surviving kitten named Toulouse went to Kay LaFrance, and matings between these cats and local domestic lines established the breed. Fanciers introduced the cats on national television during a 1991 exhibition. The International Cat Association placed the Munchkin into its new breed development program in 1994 and granted full championship status in 2003.
Adults weigh 2.3-4 kg (5-9 lb) and maintain an average-sized torso despite reduced height. The autosomal dominant mutation causes shortened long bones in all four limbs, with the hind legs measuring slightly longer than the front pair. Available in short and long hair, the coat comes in every pattern and color. Breed standards describe the Munchkin as curious, self-assured, sweet-natured, and remarkably energetic. The animals run fast, corner sharply, and often stand upright on their hind legs like meerkats to observe household surroundings.
Weekly combing handles the short plush coat, while semi-longhair variants require combing twice a week to detangle dead hairs. Routine management calls for periodic nail clipping, ear cleansing, and portion control to prevent excess spinal strain. Known health disorders in the breed include osteoarthritis, lordosis, pectus excavatum, intervertebral disc disease, and feline lower urinary tract disease.
