Lykoi

The Lykoi is a distinctive domestic cat breed from the United States, famous for its roan coat pattern and werewolf-like facial mask.

The foundational kittens came from two unrelated rescue litters carrying an unrecorded autosomal recessive coat mutation in Virginia and Tennessee. Founders Johnny Gobble, Brittney Gobble, and Patti Thomas initiated health and dermatological evaluations in 2011 to confirm the hairlessness stemmed from natural genetic factors rather than skin diseases. Deriving its name from the Greek term for wolf, the breed entered competitive registries rapidly. The International Cat Association accepted the Lykoi for registration in 2012 and elevated it to championship status in 2017. The Cat Fanciers' Association approved registration in 2018 before granting championship status in 2023. The Fédération Internationale Féline granted preliminary recognition in 2023.

Adult males weigh 3.5-5.5 kg (8-12 lb) with lean, muscular torsos and slender limbs. The coat consists of short, sparse roan fur combining unpigmented white hairs with solid colored strands. A bare facial mask around the eyes, nose, muzzle, and chin exposes bare pink skin that tans darker under sunlight. Breed standards describe an affectionate, energetic temperament with a prominent hunting drive. Lykois investigate new objects methodically, enjoy puzzle games, and follow their owners attentively while remaining calm around children and other pets.

Care requirements center on the skin rather than extensive hair detangling. Because the sparse pelt lacks an undercoat, natural sebum can accumulate on the skin and nail beds, requiring occasional wiping with damp cloths or warm baths with mild feline shampoo. Sun exposure should be monitored to avoid solar burns on bare areas. The breed shows general physical hardiness, though skin hypersensitivity, dermatophytosis, and earwax buildup can arise from sparse follicular support.
